At Sussex Gardeners, we provide you with the best all-round garden maintenance. Our business has evolved over the last 20 years to what it is today - and this is down to the hard work and dedication of the owner Luke Hillier.

Luke has been working as a gardener since he was 16. Initially at weekends whilst in 6th form college, after putting a flyer in the local church newsletter. Through recommendations and word of mouth, Luke was able to progress to full-time self-employment, providing a variety of garden maintenance services to various clients. His main passion has always been for plants, and this led to him taking the RHS Level 2 in Practical Horticulture.

Luke's hard-working ethos looks to work with people to build and grow their garden over a number of years while maintaining the overall appearance. He personally feels that gardens evolve naturally, but also must meet the needs of the client. To get this perfect balance, proper management and planning are needed.

Over the years, Luke's skill set has increased to include small hard landscaping projects from paving, fencing, pergolas, large composting structures, steps, turfing and many other landscaping areas, which he can also offer as a standalone service or as part of your garden management.

Luke is extremely passionate about every garden he works in, taking time to get to the know each individual gardens' quirks (and their owners too!).

Today we have a team of gardeners that work alongside Luke on your gardens, giving you the best the gardening world can offer!

What Our Clients Say

I moved into my house in 2019, and Luke was already looking after the garden here. I kept him on, and I’m so glad I did. He is absolutely wonderful. The garden, which is around two acres, is immaculate throughout the year, and his knowledge of plants, planting and long-term garden care is extraordinary. I look forward to his visits every week.

I particularly value the way he works collaboratively. I’ve made a lot of changes since the previous owners, and Luke is always incredibly accommodating — nothing seems to faze him. He genuinely shares my excitement about transforming the garden and has a wonderful ability to take my ideas and guide them into a living, breathing reality. When we’ve made changes, Luke will re-home plants rather than waste them, moving things thoughtfully so the garden continues to grow and flourish in a natural way.

He does everything the garden needs, whether it’s general weeding and maintenance, careful planting and propagation, splitting and moving plants to develop new areas of the garden, or expert rose care. He has a true understanding of how a garden evolves over time. Luke takes enormous pride in his work and genuinely loves what he does. He always seems to have one eye on the future, and with each passing season the garden becomes richer, more established and more beautiful. On top of that, he has a calm, kind and considerate manner and is a genuine pleasure to have around. A true gentleman. He is a very valued part of my home, and I cannot recommend him highly enough.

We first met Luke in July 2024 through a friend’s recommendation when we were looking for help with our garden. We have a good-sized semi-rural garden with trees, shrubs and perennial borders as well as a woodland planted area and pond.

Luke and Charlotte visit for a day every other week and are excellent at managing all aspects of the garden. They are hugely knowledgeable about plants and able to advise on the right plant for the right spot, appropriate to each of the different areas. Together with Elisa who has helped with specific project work, they maintain and help to develop the garden, supporting us to keep it looking good throughout the year as well as to enhance it.

They are all so easy to work with, fun as well as skilled at what they do, reliable and friendly and we highly recommend them.

Luke was recommended by a friend for whom he had been working for several years, and I was very pleased when he agreed to help me in my large garden. This was about 8 years ago and over this time he has had various people working with him, all of whom have been diligent and knowledgeable and prepared to carry out any tasks I request. I always save the most difficult and awkward jobs for them, but they never complain!

My garden covers about one and a half acres and, as my passion is for having lots of flowers for visual display and for cutting for vases indoors, I have large flower beds which require a lot of weeding. There are also many shrubs and trees which need pruning and cutting back and Luke is always happy to tackle these.

Currently Charlotte comes every two weeks for four hours, sometimes accompanied by Luke if there is more work to do. If the weather is too wet, they generally try to arrange an alternative time and are always accommodating if we have a special event for which we need the garden to look at its best. Having Sussex Gardeners on hand has made gardening less stressful and more enjoyable for me.

Luke and his colleagues have been maintaining and developing our garden for the last 10 years or so. We have been delighted by his horticultural knowledge, helpfulness, and willingness to give advice as we learn a little more about the wonderful yet sometimes frustrating process of creating a garden to enjoy wandering around. I highly recommend him if you are looking for a reliable friendly gardening team who can help towards your dream garden.
